The Champaign County Department of Job & Family
Services is the mandated agency responsible for providing protective
services for those adults over age 60 at risk of abuse, neglect, self-neglect,
or exploitation. Any referral of an adult at risk will be investigated
by a social service worker. This worker will work with the adult,
family and neighbors to eliminate any risk and provide services for
the adult to remain safely in their home. If the adult is found to
be incapacitated and unable to remain in their home safely, then the
social service worker will work with the adult to determine the least
restrictive setting and, if necessary, petition the probate court
for assistance in protecting the incapacitated adult. |

The Champaign County Department of Job & Family
Services is the mandated agency responsible for investigating complaints
of abuse or neglect of children in Champaign County. The social service
worker will work with all family members to determine options available
to eliminate the concerns of the referral and to strengthen the family
unit. The social service worker will assist in finding services for
the family, whether the needs are employment related, day care, financial
or medical, or counseling services to deal with emotional stresses.
There are times when the social service worker must intervene in the
family by involving the legal system for the protection of the child.
In these cases, the juvenile court system will become involved and
assist in the direction of a case, whether it be through mediation
services, court ordered protective supervision of a family, or, as
a last resort, temporary custody of the child to the agency. Through
all types of legal intervention, the goal remains to get services
to the family to meet their needs in order to eliminate the risk to
the child, reunify the child with the family in those cases where
temporary custody has been awarded to the agency, and to close the
children service case knowing that agency involvement has provided
the family with the needed tools to create a safe home for the child.
