C hildren and adolescents throughout Butler County experience crises that threaten the very existence of a stable family life and endanger their emotional and, sometimes, their physical well-being. Many of these children have been abused, neglected or abandoned.
Butler County Children Services offers programs to these children and their families which target the protection of the children and preservation of the family unit whenever possible.
Authority to protect children is granted to Butler County Children Services by federal and state laws. These laws mandate that the agency intervene with services to assure children who are at risk of abuse or neglect receive attention. Children Services usually begin once an allegation of abuse or neglect is brought to the attention of the agency. Such referrals often come from someone other than the parent; however, parents may call directly, seeking help.
Once a referral is made, Children Services investigates to determine if the charge is true, and if so, whether the child continues to be at risk of harm.
After interviewing the child and the family, the agency determines the ability of the family to accept and use help, and then tries to provide services that will protect the child and help the parents alter their behavior.
If all resources available to the child and family fail to help or if they are not considered appropriate and the child's safety is still at issue, Butler County Children Services must begin legal action to separate the child from the family.
