The
Ohio suicide statistics are staggering; suicide is the 9th leading
cause of death in Ohio among all age groups and is the 3rd leading
cause of death among young people ages 15-24. Our local Tri-County
Community, with a population of approximately 200,000 is no exception.
In an effort to heighten awareness and provide education about suicide
prevention, a Suicide Prevention Coalition was formed in January
2002 with representation from Darke, Miami and Shelby Counties.
The Coalition operates as a sub-committee of the Tri-County Board
and membership consists of survivors, teachers, licensed clinical
personnel and Board members and staff from the Tri-County Board.
The Coalition organized with
a common belief and concern that not enough was being done in our
local tri-county communities to bring the tragedy of suicide, particularly
youth suicide, to the forefront. In keeping with the mission of
the Coalition to become a foundation in which local community partners
can turn to for resources focusing on the prevention of suicide,
the Coalition applied for and received funds from the Ohio Department
of Mental Health and the Tri-County Board of Recovery & Mental
Health Services for the purchase of educational and outreach materials
including various booklets on suicide prevention and depression
as well as a 5-day suicide prevention curriculum for tri-county
area high schools. The materials are available at the Board Office
for Mental Health Professionals, teachers, clergy, law enforcement
and other community partners. In addition to providing outreach
materials, the Coalition also strives to promote local resources
and encourage individuals to seek help when faced with difficult
times or thoughts of suicide. Future projects of the Coalition include
suicide prevention training for teachers and gatekeepers for the
elderly population |

Who
are We?
CASA/GAL of Miami County
is a 501 (c) 3; organization that works for the abused and neglected

in need of safe, permanent, nurturing homes. They have no family
to call their own and spend years of their childhood moving from
one temporary home to another, sometimes getting lost in the system.
As CASAs we become these children's voice in the court and advocate
for their best interests.
All
of our CASAs are volunteers who represent and advocate |
